People outside Oklahoma tend to picture one thing: flat land, corn fields, not much else. I get it. I used to hear it a lot more before people actually visited. Here's what I tell them instead.
My grandma is from Ohio. The first time she visited, she was caught off guard by how many strangers smiled and waved at her on the street. That's not a one-time thing here. It's just how people act.
Many of the suburbs around OKC, places like Yukon, Mustang, Edmond, Tuttle, and Newcastle, have a small town feel. You still get the short drive to everything you actually need: work, groceries, restaurants, downtown.
Oklahoma City has built a real restaurant scene over the last several years, from longtime local spots to newer openings across the metro. It's not what outsiders expect from a "flyover state."
Between the metro's festivals, neighborhood events, and weekend markets, there's rarely a weekend without something to do. It's one of the things that surprises people most once they've lived here a year or two.
And here's the part that's hard to explain until you've lived it. You can go downtown, have a great dinner, catch a Thunder game, and then drive home past a corn field or a pasture of cows. That contrast is exactly what makes Oklahoma City different from other cities its size, and it's a big part of why I love living here.
