Some of the best weekends here don't need much of a plan. Dinner somewhere good, one great drink, and ice cream on the drive home.
Dinner at Bar Sen
Bar Sen sits on Blackwelder Avenue in the Plaza District, right next door to its sister restaurant, Ma Der. Chef Jeff Chanchaleune is a James Beard nominee, and Bar Sen is his Lao noodle bar. The rice noodles are made in house and cut by hand, and most of them are gluten free. The New York Times named it one of the 50 best restaurants in America.
Start with the noodles. Then save room for the pandan cinnamon roll, covered in pecans and coconut. The cocktails are just as good, and the mango sticky rice is on my list of all-time favorites.
Bar Sen is open Tuesday through Saturday, so plan your night around that.
A Drink Behind the Bookshelf at Good For a Few
A few blocks away on NW 16th Street, Good For a Few is a cocktail bar you walk into through a bookshelf. Inside, it's dim, quiet enough to talk, and the drinks are made with real care.
It honestly felt like I was in a different city. That's one of my favorite things about Oklahoma City. Right when you think you know it, you find a spot like this.
The Braum's Stop on the Way Home
No Oklahoma weekend is complete without a Braum's run. Everyone here has an order, and nobody agrees on what the best one is.
Braum's opened its first store in Oklahoma City in 1968. Today, everything starts at the Braum Family Farm in Tuttle, home to around 10,000 dairy cows. Braum's is the only major ice cream maker in the country that still milks its own cows. That's the scoop you're eating in the parking lot at 9pm.
If you want a daytime outing, the farm offers free guided tours of its processing plant and bakery. It's a fun one with kids.
Close to Everything, Wherever You Live
This is what I love about living here. You can spend Saturday night in the Plaza District and be home in Mustang the same evening, on a bigger lot with room to breathe. Wide open spaces, a slower pace of life, and beautiful but affordable homes, without giving up a great night out.
